ABOUT CHEF

Born in Australia to a mixed heritage family, Chef Michelle Zarrah’s culinary journey began at a young age, deeply rooted in family traditions and a love for food. At just 12 years old, she began cooking alongside her Peranakan grandmother, where she first learned the foundations of traditional Nyonya cooking, baking, and the importance of preserving authentic flavours passed down through generations.

Driven by passion and curiosity, Michelle later pursued formal culinary exposure under various international chefs, expanding her skills across Western, Asian, and Mediterranean cuisines. Over the years, she has developed a versatile culinary style shaped by both professional training and lived experience.

Her journey has taken her across Australia, Singapore, Brunei, Kuala Lumpur, and Greece, where she continued to refine her craft by learning from chefs, home cooks, and local culinary traditions in each place she lived and travelled. These experiences have deeply influenced her approach to food, blending authenticity with creativity and global inspiration.

Michelle opened her first restaurant over 26 years ago, marking the beginning of a lifelong dedication to hospitality and culinary expression. Today, as the founder and head chef of Tai Tai Restaurant, she continues to share her passion through a menu that reflects both heritage and innovation—celebrating Peranakan roots while embracing a world of flavours.

She is also currently in progress of developing her next restaurant concept, Jiwa – Story of Borneo, a deeply personal project that will focus on Sarawak indigenous cuisine thoughtfully blended with Peranakan Nyonya influences, honouring both her roots and culinary journey.

At Tai Tai, Chef Michelle’s philosophy remains simple: food should tell a story, honour tradition, and create memorable experiences for every guest who dines at her table.
