Otto e Mezzo is probably the hottest high-end fine dining spot in town and you will rub shoulders with Hong Kong’s most influential businessmen (and -women of course). Chef Bombana serves a modern Italian menu including some classic items like his famous white truffle risotto.

PROFILE

Chef Bombana had been in Hong Kong since 1993, working at the Ritz-Carlton, but following the hotel closure he opened 8 1/2 Otto e Mezzo Bombana at the beginning of 2010. Within less than a year his venture had earned two Michelin stars, with the third being awarded a year later. The name refers to Fellini’s classic film, 8 1/2.

MUST TRY

Fassone veal tenderloin, with braised celery and black winter truffle. Homemade tagliolini with butter, parmesan, and “melanosporum” black truffle fondue. A coffee trio of tiramisu, warm coffee tart, and crunchy coffee ice cream.

AMBIENCE

Located at the top of the escalator on the 2nd floor of the Landmark, the exterior is unassuming but once inside the spaciousness, the low- lamp-hung ceiling, the rich carpeting, and the big square tables make this a cozy place, with a wide window looking out to the continual buzz of Chater Road.

SERVICE

A distinct pride in the restaurant’s achievements and reputation adds a flourish to the service, which is expert and friendly.

FOOD

Chef Umberto Bombana has been dubbed the “King of White Truffles” and specializes in modern Italian cuisine prepared with the best ingredients. The sheer ebullience of Chef Bombana himself seems to come through in the cuisine, full of life and vitality, Italian to its roots and soul. His love of truffles (Piedmont has made him a Worldwide Ambassador for White Truffles) comes through strongly in the menu; from a sparkling citrus tuna tartare to the black truffle risotto, lobster salad, and oscietra caviar celery jelly, couscous, winter leaves, and champagne dressing, and an exceptional Brittany blue lobster. The listing of Italian wines is magnificent.

PRICING

HK$580-HK$1,380

SUMMARY

With the accolades heaped upon this restaurant and its owner in such a relatively short amount of time, a visit here is now one of the Hong Kong not-to-miss dining experiences. So excellent is the concept, that an 8 1/2 is now open in Shanghai and in Macau.
